Awards

Each year, EC3 presents four awards: the Scherer Award for service, the Thorpe Medal for a top journal paper, the Smith Prize for computing education, and the EC3 Best Paper Award for the top conference paper. These honor outstanding contributions to computing in the EC3 community.

Scherer Award

The Scherer Award was established by the EC3 Board in 2018 in the honour of Prof Raimar Scherer, the founder of the European Conference on Product and Process Modelling, which is the first European community within the Built Environment computing space and a predecessor of EC3.

The Scherer Award is awarded annually to an active or former EC3 officer for outstanding service to the computing community in the context of EC3. Outstanding service refers to contributions that go beyond research and teaching, encompassing activities that benefit the academic community, professional organizations, and society at large.

Thorpe Medal

The Thorpe Medal of the European Council on Computing in Construction was instituted and endowed in 2018 in the honour of Prof Antony Thorpe, a pioneering professor in construction information technology and co-founder of COMIT the community for mobile computing in construction.

The Thorpe Medal recognises a paper that contributes to either practical or research aspects of engineering informatics disciplines in the built environment.  The practical value of contribution and its impact on engineering informatics practice are key evaluation criteria.

EC³ Best Paper Award

The European Conference on Computing in Construction (EC3) Best Paper Award was instituted in 2018. It recognises an EC3 conference paper that contributes to either practical or research aspects of engineering informatics disciplines in the built environment.  The practical value of contribution and its impact on engineering informatics practice are important considerations.

The award may be presented annually to the authors of an original paper not previously contributed in whole or in part to any other council or association or otherwise appeared in print prior to its publication.  Papers to be published in the EC3 conference proceedings of the conference taking place in the year of the award are eligible and considered by default.
